I've been working at my job, starting as a Help Desk Tech, all the way up to System Admin now for about 16 years. Today I finally made my first ever mistake that brought production hard down. Was working on an unrelated but related system with a Vendor for an upgrade to that system. Part of it required me to access *THE* primary server for our workplace. Unfortunately for me, the names of the main server and this server for this vendor are VERY Similar. We needed to do a VMWare snapshot rollback after we broke something. I switched to the VMWare window, read the name of the selected server, verified it twice, then reverted to the latest snapshot. Went back to my window which had the server I was working on open, go to try to sign in... domain relationship failure. I look up at the name of the server in the upper left hand corner..... cue the swearing. Rolled back this primary server to over a year previous. I immediately tell the vendor we need to end the call, as know what the fix is now anyways for the issue we were having. Tell my boss immediately that things are down, contact the other people at work who need to know about being down, discuss our messaging options, and while doing that, started getting things restored from backup. The timing wasn't great, but wasn't bad either. We did lose data, but it was minimal. We are back up now, and while I'm still personally upset, I'm relieved that the damage done was minimal (Only a 3.5 hour outage of hard down to fully operational). Hey Admin people, I made this ticketing system for property managers to handle their maintenance coordination ( not promoting ). It's a pretty complex application with dozens of context management techniques and a bunch of communication routing streams which I used to handle my properties tenant communication and leasing / maintenance requests. My dad who's an IT director came home one day and was complaining about how awful Jira so I figured id develop the same system for service desk. So far we can sync Jira, Zendesk and handle ticket clarification for MS365 password requests, access requests, and off-boarding I use at my current company (communicate with the end-user back and fourth to clarify each ticket then pick a pre-approved deterministic workflow and route to human for approval). I’m testing an Intune BYOD config that requires (among other things) iOS devices to have a 6 digit pin. I noticed my Apple Watch now requires a pin as well. From what I can tell, it looks like the watch is simply inheriting the policy from my phone, and there’s no way around this, other than removing the pin requirement. Has anyone else run into this? If so, did you find any workarounds? I'm working on an Android app that monitors servers over plain SSH. It's already released, but I still need to work on compatibility. Stuff like really old kernels, I honestly have no idea what they return. My own machines are limited, and providers mostly offer recent images, so there's only so much I can test myself. One example: I read the CPU model from the "model name" line in /proc/cpuinfo. A lot of ARM machines don't even have that line. There are more cases like this, and I want my parsing to handle them properly instead of guessing. So, asking to borrow your boxes for half a minute. Noticed that domain went down and NS changed to parking (.eu domain). Opened instantly NameCheap panel and found out that the domain is about to expiry tomorrow. Alright, let's try to renew it automatically, nope won't work, domain has to be renewed 5 days before expiration (fucking great logic). Had to chat with support and wait over an hour so they could fix it (they also wanted to charge a redemption fee, but then took it away once released it was their fuck up). So to sum up: Auto-renewal was enabled for this domain. There was enough credit on account. There was active debit/credit card on account. Zero emails from NameCheap (spam checked). You guys better check out your domains and that Namecheap did not do the same shit to you. This is first fuck up from NameCheap since they got bough, so I am thinking about to migrate all my domains to EU based domain registrar. Seems like Gandi is the best option, but I am also available to other alternatives in EU if someone can vouch. Note that register must have quite a lot of zones (not just popular one's).

I just got an email from Google Cloud about "Sensitive actions taken in your Google Cloud organization". Upon reading it, I found that it was performed by me, so it was okay, but the notification came almost exactly 1 month after the events (the events occurred on June 26, now is July 26). Hi, I urgently need a dedicated GPU server and I’m ready to order immediately. My requirements are: CPU: 20+ physical cores preferred. Older Intel Xeon CPUs are completely fine, including dual-CPU configurations such as dual Xeon E5-26xx systems. RAM: Minimum 96GB, preferably 128GB. DDR3 or DDR4 is fine. GPU: Any dedicated NVIDIA GPU is acceptable, including GTX 1080, GTX 1650, GTX 1660, RTX 2060, or anything similar.
